Empowering Imagination: Women Shaping the Toy Industry

On the 8th of September at the showcase Back to Play In the Garden City organized by Pop Mart and Pop Toy Show a panel discussion titled 'Women in Art Toys’ was held. We ventured into the vibrant realm of art toy creation moderated by Jessica Emmett, who led this dynamic conversation with the talented panel of Erika Tay, Sarah Isabel Tan, Yang Ovo, Klaris, and Steffi. Together, they dissect the challenges and opportunities encountered by women within this thriving industry. From addressing accessibility hurdles in market entry to harnessing the readily available skills and artistry to hone and share online thanks to social media, our panelists illuminate the distinct facets of their craft. Furthermore, they confront the unspoken query: must they justify the value of their work? In this discourse, we delve into the equilibrium between skill and allure in the art toy world, and the influence of societal preferences on artistic decisions. This panel incited a journey about the intersection of art, gender, and toy creation, dispelling the myth that 'cool things' belong exclusively to one gender.

The collectible toy market has experienced an unprecedented surge in popularity in recent years, captivating enthusiasts of all ages with its unique blend of nostalgia, artistry, and investment potential. Once relegated to the hobbyist fringes, this market has now firmly established itself in the mainstream, drawing in collectors from around the globe. Fueling this rise is the convergence of several key factors.

First and foremost, the digital age has played a pivotal role in reshaping the collectible toy landscape. Online marketplaces and social media platforms have connected collectors, making it easier than ever to buy, sell, and showcase prized items. Moreover, the internet has democratized access to information about rare and sought-after toys, empowering collectors with knowledge that was previously elusive. This newfound transparency has led to a more informed and engaged collector base, driving up interest and demand.

Secondly, the allure of collectible toys goes beyond mere ownership; it's a form of art appreciation. Many of these toys are meticulously crafted by talented artists, often in limited quantities, turning them into miniature masterpieces. Collectors are drawn not only to the tangible value of these items but also to the artistic expression and creativity they represent. This fusion of art and collectability has broadened the market's appeal, attracting a diverse range of collectors, from traditional enthusiasts to contemporary art connoisseurs. As a result, the collectible toy market has evolved into a dynamic and multifaceted industry, transcending its humble origins as mere playthings to become an art form and a highly profitable investment arena.
